Need help studying for the NFHS examination?

The annual administration of the National Federation of High Schools soccer examination for the state of Virginia will take place on Monday, February 28, 2005. Any official unable to make the local administration of this exam at James River High School should contact Commissioner Owen Waltman or President Bill Franz as soon as possible.

The examination consists of 100 questions to be classified as True or False. Many questions are drawn from the play rulings, so make sure you study that section of the rule book in addition to the rules as stated. Note in particular the differences between NFHS rules and FIFA's Laws of the Game. Rule differences are often highlighted. Study the rule changes for the current year -- there is almost always a question or three on the new rules in play.

As a final study tip, we note that the high school examination is consistently constructed from year to year. Studying old examinations is helpful. Access to old examinations is fairly easy if you are a veteratn official -- save yours from year to year. If you do not have access to previous exams, consider visiting the following web sites:

1. Tidewater Soccer Referees has posted a copy of the questions and answers to the 2003-2004 exam.

2. The Northern Kentucky Soccer Referee Association has posted a copy of the questions and answers to the 2002-2003 exam.
